Founded as a small anti-gang program in 1975, the Council for Unity says it now reaches 100,000 young people across the globe each year through its curriculum and publishing initiatives, all on a $1.7 million budget. The council’s staff of former gang members goes to schools, community centers and prisons to teach about leadership, conflict management and communication skills.
