THE BOSTON GLOBE
Over the past three school years, the number of homeless students in Massachusetts grew from about 7,000 to an estimated 12,000, according to official data. Students in foster placements and those who are living temporarily with relatives are included in that number, along with youth who have run away or been kicked out of their homes and are living in shelters or on the streets. More than 500 families are living in motels paid for by the state of Massachusetts – a dramatic increase from the 27 families housed that way last year. Asked about the increase, one school official told the Globe, “It’s definitely getting grimmer.” Oct. 6, http://www.boston.com.
