Jermaine Myrie will be the new CEO of MENTOR, a national nonprofit focused on expanding and improving the youth mentoring field and movement in the United States. He succeeds outgoing CEO David Shapiro on April 24.

A New York native and a resident of the Boston area for more than 25 years, Myrie started his career as a middle school English teacher in Boston, according to a MENTOR press release. He has held numerous leadership positions in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors, most recently serving as chief external affairs officer at uAspire, a national nonprofit with the mission of ensuring that all young people have the financial information and resources necessary to find an affordable path to and through college.

Myrie holds a Master of Arts in teaching in middle and secondary education from Simmons College and a bachelor’s degree in English and sociology from Morehouse College.

“Jermaine is a highly accomplished and dedicated nonprofit leader who distinguished himself during a rigorous and inclusive search process among a nationwide pool of nearly 150 applicants with his unique background in education, business development, and external affairs” a press release from MENTOR stated. “He has proven experience leading through change and a keen understanding of how cross-sector partnerships and community building at both the national and local levels can drive systemic change.”
