Last week, a student walked into my office, visibly shaken by recent tech headlines. She anxiously asked if artificial intelligence was going to wipe out entry-level positions before she even graduated, rendering her degree useless within five years. That conversation stayed with me, but it is not unique to classrooms.
For youth-serving professionals, career counselors and mentors across the sector, this “AI anxiety” reflects a deeper generational dread about economic survival, professional identity and a future changing faster than young people can process.
We cannot dismiss these concerns or treat them as proof of an inevitable disaster. Our classrooms and youth-serving systems should be places where young people can name their feelings, ask questions and practice critical thinking. However, before educational institutions and youth organizations can provide clear guidance, we must confront a glaring roadblock up front: The system itself is structurally confused. Schools and youth-serving systems are currently trying to support young people within a framework governed by messy, inconsistent and often flat-out contradictory approaches to setting AI policies.
One department bans it as plagiarism; another encourages it as innovation.

Why AI dread extends beyond classroom borders
To make matters more complicated, we must acknowledge an uncomfortable truth: The majority of adults, educators and organizational leaders are tech Luddites themselves. Many mentors and teachers are secretly just as intimidated by tools like generative AI as the youth they serve, yet they are tasked with preparing the next generation for an automated workforce. When adults lead from a place of unaddressed anxiety or technical ignorance, they inadvertently worsen the crisis for young people.

The Gen Z workforce is stepping onto an economic landscape heavily dominated by unproven algorithms. Young people often share their dread with youth mentors, wondering why they should invest heavily in professional training if basic software can mimic entry-level human labor. When youth-serving professionals react with outdated, defensive assumptions rather than adapting, this rapid transition transforms from a corporate news cycle into a genuine mental health and motivational crisis for a whole generation.
Moving toward practical literacy and student care
Our absolute first job as supportive adults is to listen before handing out hollow reassurance. When systems minimize these valid professional worries, we instantly lose the trust of the youth.
Honest, open dialogues are the only way to help young people separate actual technological capabilities from sensationalized, clickbait doom-mongering.
Instead of amplifying collective panic, youth advocates and educators must double down on uncopiable human traits: moral judgment, deep empathy, communication and adaptability. These skills won’t make our youth bulletproof against automation, but they do provide a solid sense of personal agency. We must teach young people to approach digital systems with healthy skepticism, understanding their built-in biases, data privacy risks and extreme limitations.
What we do tomorrow: A blueprint from the field
Bringing this piece back to a concrete place requires honest, personal practice. My office serves as a higher education career counseling hub, where my daily work revolves around helping college-level youth navigate the transition into the workforce. In my own routine, I am highly comfortable using generative AI daily — primarily to critique raw essay outlines, analyze fluctuating market trends and map out resume frameworks. But my comfort comes from knowing where the tech fails.

During and after my conversation with that anxious student, I didn’t offer empty positivity. Instead, I pulled up my laptop, ran a career-related prompt with her and together we picked apart the flawed, generic output the machine produced. I showed her how her unique perspective and lived experiences were elements the software simply could not replicate.
Next time a young person brings me this question, I will tell them directly that AI is a tool to manage, not a replacement for their intellect. Tomorrow, I plan to preempt these panics altogether. Instead of waiting for students to break down in my office, I am proactively starting weekly group workshops where we bring generative AI into the room, critically deconstruct its limitations and discuss our fears openly.
When youth systems treat this panic as a cue to listen, train adults alongside youth and demystify the machine, our students can finally face the economic future with systemic support, integrity and confidence.
