After the 2018 expansion of its youth employment initiatives into Detroit, Urban Alliance has announced that Sherri Davis Chisholm will be the first executive director of its Detroit operations.

She arrives at Urban Alliance after years in nonprofit leadership and in major school districts. She most recently founded and led FreeSpace Consulting Group as its CEO, working to guide and support nonprofits and school districts to improve public education.

Chisholm, a Detroit native, demonstrates the potential of every young person in Detroit to succeed. Her mother was a Detroit Public Schools Community District teacher and principal who instilled in her the values of education and hard work from an early age.

Chisholm would attend the University of Michigan for undergraduate work before gaining entry to Harvard University to earn a master of education degree with a concentration in public/private partnership. Now, after building her career, she will spearhead the efforts of Urban Alliance to provide real opportunity and instill these values in youth across the region.

More than 40 high school seniors were provided with one-year, comprehensive job training programs during the first year of Urban Alliance’s Detroit operations through its High School Internship Program. The organization, with Chisholm leading in Detroit, aims to expand the program over the next few years to serve hundreds of youth.

“The future of our city lies with our youth, and it is our responsibility to help them reach their full potential,” said Chisholm in a blog post about the appointment. “I am honored to serve my hometown as the first Executive Director of Urban Alliance Detroit, and proud to join a team so committed to creating pathways to workforce opportunities for the promising young people who will be this community’s next leaders.”
