Raising Their Voices: Engaging Students, Teachers and Parents to Help End the High School Dropout Epidemic

Civic Enterprises

Based on focus group discussion in four cities – Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis and Kingsport, Tenn. – this report contributes to the ongoing discussion on the nation’s dropout problem by providing perspectives from youths, parents and educators. It deals with two of the leading causes of student dropout – boredom and lack of course relevancy – and offers solutions that range from greater parental involvement to more engaged teaching.

With 239 book citations, the report adds depth and breadth to a discussion that is often plagued by misconceptions and broad generalizations. It includes the instrument used to facilitate the discussions that serve as its basis.
