Sex Ed: Any Link Between What Teens Learn, How They Behave?

The debate between abstinence-only and comprehensive sex education advocates has been reignited by the announcement that the 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is pregnant. Proponents of each form of sex education cite studies to back up their opinions, but researchers say there is little connection between what students are taught and their actions. A study published in the September issue of Sexuality Research & Social Policy showed that abstinence programs did not delay the initiation of sex, while nearly half of the comprehensive programs reduced the number of partners and increased the use of contraceptives.
