This report presents the findings of the Social Security Administration’s implementation of seven original Youth Transition Demonstration projects, completed as part of a broader initiative to benefit disability beneficiaries.
The seven projects were led by various organizations in six different states – California, Colorado, New York, Iowa, Maryland and Mississippi – all of which addressed both work- and school-related challenges of disabled youth.
The report lists six lessons that emerged from the demonstration projects, in an attempt to help policymakers and administrators “develop, fund, and provide interventions for youth with disabilities who are making the transition from school to adulthood.”
Among these lessons are the importance of strong partnerships, the advantages and limitations of operating small-scale programs and the need to implement interventions that provide direct employment services to youth.
