Teen Internet and American Life Project
The share of American teenagers using cell phones increased from 45 percent in 2004 to 71 percent in 2008, according to this new survey by Pew Internet. The survey was originally conducted in 2004 and has subsequently followed teen cell phone use in 2006 and 2008; a new report will be released in 2010.
The report examines the increase in the number of teens who use phones and how teens use phones and also looks at the percentages of teens who own other media devices. It also breaks down the demographics of teen cell phone users by gender, age, ethnicity, Internet use and household income.
Teens 15 to 17 years old are more likely to be cell phone users than younger teens, and Internet users are more likely to have cell phones than nonusers, the report says.
Despite increases in mobile phone use, the landline is still relevant to today’s teens. Eighty-eight percent of teens use a landline at least occasionally. Free. http://www.pewinternet.org.
