SAMHSA’s Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) system provides data on emergency hospital visits involving illicit drugs, alcohol and the non-medical use of pharmaceuticals. In 2005, more than 1.4 million of the nation’s 108 million visits to emergency departments were associated with drug misuse or abuse. Cocaine was involved in 448,481 visits, marijuana in 242,200, heroin in 164,572, and stimulants (including amphetamines and methamphetamines) in 138,950. DAWN estimates that there were 56,978 alcohol-related visits by 12- to 17-year-olds, and 88,781 alcohol-related visits by 18- to 20-year-olds. Free. 94 pages.
