The Classroom

1 minute. Free online video.

This winner of UNICEF’s video contest for young people marks the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. All one-minute submissions expressed one or more of these human rights in this international treaty: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.

“The Classroom,” the winning entry by Sonu Thakur of West Bengal, India, shows a girl standing at a window, peering into a classroom. Invited inside by the teacher, the girl sits alone on the classroom floor struggling through her workbook. As the teacher coaches the class, each frame brings the newcomer closer to the rest of the class, until she sits among them in a confident chorus of readers.
