School Mental Health: Role of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA] and Factors Affecting Service Provision

U.S. Government Accountability Office

As of August, slightly more than one-quarter of the interventions listed on SAMHSA’s Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices were related to school mental health, including interventions designed to address aggressive behavior, depression and school violence. This report describes SAMHSA’s coordination with other federal agencies to support mental health services in schools; the agency’s efforts to identify and support evidence-based school mental health services and best practices; and factors that affect the provision of mental health services in schools. It stresses that having program champions and support from school leaders can play a role in implementing school mental health services, and that the absence of either factor can threaten program continuity.
