American youth continue to show strong preferences for specific cigarette brands – Marlboros, Newports and Camels – according to this survey of more than 3,500 thirteen- to 18-year-olds. Almost 40 percent of teen smokers report that they usually smoke cigarettes labeled “light,” “ultra-light” or “mild.”
The report documents teen smokers’ preference for flavored cigarettes: Nearly 37 percent of them, including 81 percent of African-American teen smokers, reported that they usually smoke a menthol brand. Only 11 percent of young smokers reported having tried new candy-flavored cigarettes, but 52 percent of those who had heard of the cigarettes indicated an interest in trying them. Free. 16 pages.
