State Estimates of Substance Use from the 2004-2005 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health

U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

This annual national survey provides state-level rates for 23 measures of substance use and mental health problems, including underage drinking, binge drinking, use of illegal drugs, serious mental illness and tobacco use. This report marks the first time that comparable state estimates have been available for three consecutive time periods (2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05).

One example of the findings for the most recent period: Past-month underage drinking among 12- to 20-year-olds was lowest in Utah (21 percent) and highest in Wisconsin (nearly 40 percent). Available free online. (877) 726-4727, http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k5state/toc.cfm.
