Nonprofits and government agencies have new opportunities to tap Recovery Act dollars to boost their capacity to serve disadvantaged individuals under the “Strengthening Communities Fund,” a program run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Applications under two programs, one offering $34 million in grants to nonprofits and the other offering $12 million to state, local and tribal governments, are due July 7. All told, the two programs will provide about 80 grants to address community economic recovery issues, such as helping low-income individuals secure and retain employment. HHS recently held technical assistance conference calls to assist organizations with preparing applications; transcripts and recordings of the sessions are available online.
