New York Life Foundation Supports Service Learning

The New York Life Foundation has awarded $200,000 over two years to The LEAGUE, a school- and web-based program created by a consortium of business, education and nonprofit leaders to teach youth about philanthropy and civic responsibility. The award will enable The LEAGUE to jump-start programs in up to 10 schools each in Cleveland and Atlanta.

The LEAGUE’s K-12 “Learning to Give” curriculum teaches students to identify community needs and choose an issue with which to become involved. The program is structured using an advisory board in each city and “head coaches” and student “captains” in each school. Its website encourages “co-opetition” (a cross between cooperation and competition) by awarding and tracking points for each team’s community service events and publicizing them. Contact: The LEAGUE, (973) 643-6373, www.theleague.org.
