President Obama announced today that he is creating an education program that focuses on African Americans, NBC News reports.

Pennsylvania released a list of 414 worst performing schools. Students there may be eligible for the new Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit, according to The Record.

Child Welfare – Kids Count Edition

Many stories are out about different states’ standing on the 2012 Kids Count report. They will be listed here.

New Mexico falls to 49th on child welfare, reports The Alamogordo Daily News.

Arizona earns an “f” in child welfare, according to Fox 10 News.

Alabama has improved its Kids Count rating, The Montgomery Advertiser reports.

Tennessee has high child health scores, according to The Paris Post-Inquisitor.

Iowa is in the top ten and Illinois has improved, reports The Quad City Times.

Oregon tumbled 15 spots to 33, The Statesmen Journal reports.

Juvenile Justice

Kentucky county attorney wants to make juvenile courts open, WAVE 3 reports.

The Texas Juvenile Justice Department is reviewing the histories of all youths in its detention centers, according to The Texas Tribune.
