The FBI is warning parents who use EPPICards to receive child support payments to guard against giving their personal information to scammers on the Internet. The website for the EPPICard (www.eppicard.com) recently warned cardholders about e-mails, text messages and phone calls that scammers use to try to obtain information from cardholders by pretending to be administrators of the program.
EPPICards, which are used in 15 states, are similar to debit cards and are touted as safer than cash and cheaper than checks (which some people redeem by paying check-cashing fees). Anyone who has received one of the suspicious messages can contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.IC3.gov.
