Children’s Rights (CR), the child welfare advocacy group, announced Tuesday that William Meezan will assume the position of director of policy and research, filling the position left by Julie Farber in January.
Meezan, an author and researcher in the field of social work and child welfare services, comes to CR from Ohio State University, where he was a professor of social work and served as dean of the College of Social Work for the past four years.
Meezan received the 2009 Pro Humanitate Literary Award from the North American Resource Center for Child Welfare.
Meezan and Children’s Rights have crossed paths before, when he worked as an expert witness in CR’s famous class action suit against New Mexico. CR is well known for its controversial lawsuits against struggling child welfare systems. The case brought against New Mexico in 1980 was the first in a line of class actions suits demanding system reforms, including cases against New York, Mississippi and Washington, D.C.
