Children in 323,000 households experienced instances of very low food security in 2007, up from 221,000 in 2006, according to this report.
Nearly 89 percent of U.S. households were “food secure” last year, a level essentially unchanged from 2005 and 2006. Food-secure households are defined as those having access to enough food to maintain active, healthy lives for all family members at all times during the year. The remaining 11 percent (13 million households) were “food insecure”; those families had difficulty providing enough food for all their members at some point last year. Free, 65 pages.
