Examinations of tobacco documents by authors Anne Landman (American Lung Association) and Stanton Glantz (Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education) show that the aim of youth initiatives by tobacco companies is self-serving and potentially detrimental to smoking prevention efforts. Documents from Phillip Morris list the criteria for success of its youth smoking prevention programs as whether they caused “reduction in legislation introduced and passed restricting or banning our sales” and the “passage of legislation favorable to the industry.” American Journal of Public Health, 800 I St. NW, Washington, DC 20001. $7, free online.
