Music Education Support Grants

Subject: Education, Music Education, Youth Development
Deadline: July 31, 2018

“The CMA Foundation is focused on shaping the next generation through music education. We believe every child should have access and opportunity to participate in a quality program. Meeting the needs of each community through music education is complex and often takes time. We work closely with our grantees to establish best practices, generate innovative teaching opportunities, engage local community through advocacy, and strengthen the quality of music instruction. We are also committed to celebrating the successes of the music education community.

The Foundation is focused on 5 priorities when reviewing grant applications.

1. Student Achievement & Participation – We believe that investing in our next generation through music is an additional pathway for success during a child’s K-12 tenure because music education bolsters student engagement and academic achievement. Our investments focus on sequential learning opportunities, improving student outcomes and increasing participation. Music also plays a crucial role in social and emotional learning. We know this to be effective in student engagement and achievement both in and out of the classroom.

2. Public Private Collaboration – We invest in partnerships between schools and community organizations that work together to solve challenges facing the students being served. These unique partnerships use continuous learning approaches and innovative teaching practices to best meet the needs of the community being supported through music. Collaborative efforts should be addressing quality of music instruction or curriculum, retention of students participating in music, increased participation in music offerings, etc. All efforts aim to improve student achievement.

3. Music Education Innovation – As the needs of students and teachers evolve, teaching practices and offerings are often slower to transition forward. We value innovative teaching models, offerings, and programs that increase student participation in music beyond the traditional music education curriculum (band, choir, orchestra). Music technology has also been an area of opportunity and need through many of our innovative investments.

4. Music Educator Support – Investing in professional development is vital to the CMA Foundation. Without effective teachers and leaders to support our students, quality music programs are not able to thrive. We understand a workplace environment where continued learning and development is prioritized leads to effective teaching outcomes. Through professional development and communication, we are able to address challenges facing music education where innovation may be lacking. Professional development simultaneously creates community when it’s needed most. Ultimately, we support organizations and programs that prepare music educators and school leaders to better serve the needs of their students.

5. Research – We invest in reliable, effective, data collection on a wide range of topics and subjects facing the music education field. As a funder we often look to research and program evaluation as a resource for storytelling and policy making. We know with better data, analytics and evidence we can strengthen the dialogue around music education.”
