Nonprofit organizations, particularly charities and social service groups, are facing financial strains as the economy slows, jeopardizing the safety net they provide to many citizens. During times of economic slowdown, nonprofits play an increased role as both economic pillars and providers of services to the poor and disadvantaged. But state governments and private donors, who also face escalating operating costs, are scaling back their support of nonprofits.
Cash-strapped nonprofits should pool resources, forge alliances and improve their financial administration to make programs more sustainable, according to a Boston Foundation report.
