Some students are angered by what they see as increasingly aggressive recruitment by the military in New York City’s public high schools. Anti-recruiting groups accuse recuiters of harassing youth, manipulating them with slick marketing, disproportionately targeting low-income students and students of color, and telling students that joining the military is the only way kids like them will ever get to college.
Military officials deny that they target certain demographic groups and say they recruit “like any other business … trying to give each recruiter a population that is large enough to recruit from.” June 27, http://www.nypress.com.
