Child Welfare

An arrest with potential for widespread effect in Missouri: A foster parent who had cared for about 35 children over the course of 10 years in the state was arrested for molestation, reports Emily Rittman and Ben Knaup of KSPR. The allegations related to the arrest date back to 2007.

In Maryland, reports Yvonne Wenger of the Baltimore Sun, child welfare officials want to end the state’s relationship with a private nonprofit provider it believes was not living up to its requirements on conducting background checks on foster parents.

Education/Jobs

Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) has proposed legislation that would sunset the Corporation for National and Community Service, reports Brian Francisco of Indiana’s Journal Gazette. “My bill is based on a simple truth: It’s not volunteering if it comes with a paycheck,” Stutzman said.

Tea Party leader and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) suggested that he might support the DREAM Act for the first time in a speech last week, reports Bloomberg.

Juvenile Justice

Nice retrospective on the Luzerne County “kids for cash” scandal here from Hank Greziak and Zack Needles from Law. com., although it gives the misguided impression that juvenile judge Mark Ciavarella only started with the absurd detentions in connection with the private facility.
