Child Welfare

A Pennsylvania program that pays for child care teachers to take college courses has been eliminated due to budget cuts, reports Brian Hall of PublicOpinion.com. Nearly 2,000 workers will either have to assume the full cost of their classes or stop taking them.

Connecticut’s animal control officers and child welfare workers will be required to share information on abusers starting on Oct. 1, reports LeAnne Gendreau of NBC Connecticut.

Angela Glover Blackwell, CEO of PolicyLink writing for the Huffington Post, says the reason that seniors are “reneging” on their commitment to future generations is because those generations no longer look like them. Eighty percent of seniors are white, Blackwell says, while almost half of the nation’s youth are minorities.

Juvenile Justice

Carol Marbin Miller of Miami Herald reports on the medical log of Eric Perez, an 18-year-old who died in one of the state’s detention centers on July 10.
