Students attempting to take advantage of the community college systems across the country are quickly finding that “open access” isn’t as open as it used to be, according to The New York Times. Traditionally, community colleges follow the open-access model, admitting anyone regardless of age or educational background. But an influx of degree-hungry students, coupled with major budget cuts, have left many young people unable to register for necessary classes and struggling to complete their courses of study in a reasonable amount of time.
The Times story comes just days after the Department of Education proposed new rules to oversee the growing sector of for-profit colleges which have been picking up the slack from community colleges, at a much higher tuition rates. Read “Community Colleges Cut Back on Open Access” here.
