National League of Cities
This National League of Cities report, released last month at the league’s National Summit on Your City’s Families in Boston, examines strategies, innovations and trends that cities across the United States have developed and are familiarizing themselves with to work toward the well-being of children and their families.
The selected cities, chosen on the basis of the league’s Youth, Education and Family Institute’s work with thousands of city officials, are used as models for future developments in specialized programs, training and support for other municipalities to get actively involved in helping to structure healthy families. The report looks at innovations and trends regarding: early childhood success, education, after-school, youth in transition, youth violence prevention, community wellness, youth civic engagement, family economic success and local “infrastructure.”
Three to four innovations are discussed for each section. A list of emerging and established trends is provided for each topic, and each chapter concludes with a set of new ideas for municipal leadership, which include research, public policy and nonprofits.
