The number of young adults (16 to 24 years old) who volunteered in 2008 rose by more than 441,000 to 8.2 million, according to this comprehensive new report. It is based on surveys of 100,000 individuals collected by the U.S. Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The percentage of young adults who volunteered rose to 21.9 percent in 2008, from 20.8 percent in 2007, but continued to fall short of the 24.4 percent of young adults who volunteered in 2005. Most of the volunteers worked for religious organizations (31 percent) and education projects (30.8 percent) with the remainder spread across health organizations (8.9 percent), civic groups (4.5 percent) sports or arts groups (3.2 percent), social services (14 percent) and other groups (8 percent).
