Rare childhood onset schizophrenia (COS) strikes children younger than 13. By fourth grade, says Parker’s mother in the Childhood Onset program, Parker seemed to have “76 TV stations in his head and he didn’t have control of the clicker.” Although he is stabilized by medication and therapy, Parker reports that life is “sometimes a bummer.”
When schizophrenia begins from the mid-teens to early 20s, it has a better prognosis. In the Adolescent Onset program, 22-year-old Jasper’s “pretty creepy” hallucinations recede to infrequent whispers, as long as he takes his medication.
