Being homeless is hard enough, but being a homeless teenager adds even more problems to an already tumultuous time of life. An increasing number of youth-only homeless shelters exist to meet the needs of such teens. In Milwaukee, Pathfinders Youth Shelter houses and serves up to eight youths in an old Victorian house for two weeks at time – a stint one street-weary teen called a “two-week vacation.”
The Washington-based National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates that 1 million youths run away or are homeless each year. The group also points out that transitional housing costs $20,000 per youth per year, compared with $60,000 per year to operate a single cell in a juvenile corrections facility.
