Written halfway through a three-year evaluation of Boys & Girls Clubs, the report examines what it takes to get and keep youth involved in out-of-school-time activities. Based on survey data from 400 seventh- and eighth-graders, club attendance data for a 17-month period and in-depth interviews with high school freshmen, the study identifies factors that contribute to the frequency, duration and retention of youth participation. Those factors include establishing relationships with young children that endure into their teen years, acknowledging the importance of teen friendships, and working with youth to establish flexible attendance policies that accommodate busier high school schedules.
