Teen Dating Abuse on the Rise, Experts Say

As many one in three dating couples between the ages of 14 and 24 have engaged in abusive behaviors such as hitting, kicking, choking and shoving, according to some mental health experts. And with the advent of 24/7 communication via cell phones, BlackBerries, laptops and social networking sites, mental and emotional abuse can continue even when the couple isn’t physically together, in the form of nonstop calls, constant texting and public cyberbullying. “These kids just can’t get away from their abusers,” says Jane Randel, vice president of communications at Liz Claiborne, which conducted a poll on dating abuse.
