New Mexico’s innovative Ice Breakers program is bringing together mothers who have lost custody of their children and the foster parents who are caring for those children. The program strives to make the transition between home and foster care as painless as possible for children.
Mothers and foster mothers often begin by discussing a child’s favorite foods, nicknames, medical history and special toys – but end up forging a relationship that will keep the bio-mom involved in her child’s life as she works to get her own life together. Officials hope that biological parents – by consistently witnessing parenting skills modeled by foster parents and through consistent, positive contacts with their children – will be empowered to regain custody.
