The report examines the relationship between dating violence, lifetime sexual assault and suicide attempts. Researchers found that for adolescent females, recent dating violence was associated with one or more suicide attempts in the previous year. In adolescent males, a history of sexual assault was associated with suicide attempts. The authors recommend that clinicians and educators screen adolescents for past incidents of dating violence and sexual victimization, and use a low threshold for deciding which at-risk youths are referred to mental health services.
