Doctors are prescribing strong anti-psychotic drugs for thousands of children in Florida, even though the FDA has approved those drugs only for use by adults. Some parents say their children’s often violent behavior is remedied only by powerful drugs like Abilifly and Risperdal. They also say that behavioral therapists are hard to come by. But the drugs often produce side effects, including significant weigth gain and, in extreme cases, an increase in suicidal thoughts. The long-term effects of such drugs on children are unknown.
