Lynne Holden is a doctor honored for encouraging less advantaged students in New York to enter health professions. Rajiv Kumar was honored for efforts to reduce obesity in Providence, R.I. Satira Streeter was honored for delivering family-focused mental health services to children and families living in impoverished parts of Washington, D.C.
These three are among 10 individuals who won the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s 2009 Community Health Leader Award, which honors people working to improve the health and quality of life for disadvantaged men, women and children. The program, now in its 16th year, provides all winners grants of $125,000, the foundation announced late last week.
Holden is president and chief executive officer of Mentoring in Medicine Inc., in Bronx, N.Y. Kumar is chairman and co-founder of Shape Up RI, which establishes and executes team-based programs for Rhode Island residents to address obesity challenges and improve health through exercise and healthy eating. Streeter is the executive and clinical director of Ascensions Community Services Inc., a Washington, D.C., organization serving Washington’s Anacostia community.
