Managing a cadre of volunteers can be a management headache, but it’s hard to beat them as an investment value. They were worth $18.77 an hour last year, up from $18.04 per hour in 2005, according to the latest annual survey by Independent Sector.
The estimate is based on the average hourly wage, plus estimated fringe benefits, for all non-management, non-agriculture employees, as determined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Independent Sector, a nonprofit coalition of 575 charities and foundations, says organizations can use the estimate to quantify the economic value of their volunteers.
