“The Enhancing Juvenile Indigent Defense program will support states and localities in developing and implementing strategies to improve juvenile indigent defense. The goal of this program is to implement enhancements that improve juvenile indigent defense. Program objectives are to ensure that youth involved with the juvenile justice system have access to legal representation and access to resources that address the collateral consequences of justice system involvement. Best practices for Enhancing Juvenile Indigent Defense can be found in the National Juvenile Defense Standards.
In FY 2020, and in addition to executing any statutory prioritization that may be applicable, OJP
will give priority consideration to applications as follows:
- Applications that address specific challenges that rural communities face.
- Applications that demonstrate that the individuals who are intended to benefit from the
requested grant reside in high-poverty areas or persistent-poverty counties. - Applications that offer enhancements to public safety in economically distressed
communities (Qualified Opportunity Zones).”
