State of the Sector Survey

Nonprofit Finance Fund

Leaders at more than half of all nonprofits (51 percent) do not believe they will be able to meet demands for service in 2010.

Most also anticipate decreases in corporate giving and sponsorship, as well as decreases in funding from foundations, the federal government and United Way.

These are among the findings of this new survey, the second one of its kind by the Nonprofit Finance Fund.

The survey found that 36 percent of nonprofits finished 2009 with a deficit, while 35 percent finished with an operating surplus and 29 percent broke even.

Forty-three percent expect to break even in 2010, while 25 percent expect a deficit, 18 percent expect a surplus, and the remaining 14 percent stated they couldn’t predict.
