Darius Goes West

Darius Goes West Foundation Inc.
94 minutes. DVD $19.99.

The story of Darius Weems could easily be sad: Stricken by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the obese teenager in a wheelchair is doomed to an early death, just as the same disease took his older brother. But Darius is jovial and frank, and his youth worker friends produced this inspirational documentary about taking him on a cross-country trip to Hollywood. Their goal is to badger the MTV show “Pimp My Ride” to outfit Darius’ electric wheelchair with a TV and other toys. But their story lies in their journey, as Darius revels in such experiences as his first dip in the ocean and a visit to the Grand Canyon. The movie, a great choice for a group showing, has spawned a small activist movement that youths can join through the website. Film sales benefit DMD research.
