Finding Common Ground: Service Learning and Education Reform

This report, authored by Sarah S. Pearson, provides evidence that service learning programs, which combine community service with academic study, should be included in education reform and revitalization efforts. Pearson reviewed surveys completed by 28 federally recognized Comprehensive School Reform programs, which are comprehensive strategies employed by schools to raise the academic performance of students. Half the programs analyzed were considered compatible with service learning projects. The report includes detailed profiles of each of the 28 reform models, barriers to adoption and implementation of service learning, and recommendations to align the two education movements. 137 pages. $10.
