Breaking the Silence: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Foster Youth Tell Their Stories

National Center for Lesbian Rights, Free.

“I won’t sit in the dark and be a hanger. The only things in the closet are my rights,” says Captain, one of the 10 young adults who recount their experiences in the foster care system for this DVD. NCLR, working with San Francisco State’s Bay Area Academy, helped them put together artistic narratives that encapsulate the way the system either impeded or (less frequently) assisted their growth as young gay adults. Along with the DVD comes a CD containing resources related to the improvement of services for gay foster youth. The package is a valuable resource for administrators and social workers in contact with gay youth. (415) 392-6257, http://www.nclrights.org.
