Refocusing on youth development: Changes coming to Youth Today

Refocusing on youth development _Changes coming to Youth Today: Youth Today newspaper being held by hand

July marks four months since Knowledge to Power Catalysts took over as the publisher of Youth Today. During this time, we have been in conversation with leaders and practitioners from across the allied youth fields about the publication and its potential and have rebuilt and relaunched the Youth Today Advisory Council.

At the heart of many of our conversations is a story that resonates with me as it parallels my own experience with Youth Today. Individuals recount how much they relied on Youth Today — particularly when it was still in print form — as the go-to source for “news” on youth development. Each month, when a new issue would arrive, it would be passed around the office, and readers would absorb fresh ideas, the latest research, insights from field leaders and more. Reading Youth Today helped provide a connection to the broader youth development field, reminding us that we were not alone in this work. It is time for Youth Today to once again meet that purpose.

“Im bringing a lot of energy to the revised Youth Today, because I think it’s more important than ever right now,” said Jane Quinn, Youth Today advisor.

It is our goal to recenter Youth Today as the go-to publication for youth development champions who are promoting these principles and practices across the allied youth fields, with a particular focus on young people ages 10 to 25.

To accomplish that, beginning next week, you will notice some transitions to how Youth Today gets information to you. You can expect to see:

  • More new content! Two to three new pieces will be published on the Youth Today website Tuesday through Thursday each week.
  • Far fewer reprints! Over the past year, you have likely noticed that Youth Today has become largely a reprint publication, sharing articles from other sources related to children and youth. Moving forward, reprints in Youth Today will be limited to stories with direct ties to youth development.
  • A new weekly newsletter! Youth Today Weekly will be published each Thursday. This newsletter will highlight new content and also share articles, videos and more from other publications. The first issue will hit inboxes on July 10.
  • A free grants newsletter! The grants content that was traditionally behind a paywall, and the weekly grants newsletter, will now be available without a paid subscription.
  • A monthly roundup! We will recap the month’s coverage in a monthly newsletter that helps make sense of and connect the content across key themes.

You can sign up for the grants newsletter here and the weekly and monthly newsletters here. No fuss. No charge. Just news, opinions and updates from and for the people who believe that when youth thrive, we all thrive.
