Job Description

Position: Van Driver-Assistant Success Coach (Hybrid position)

Type: Non-Exempt

Title of Supervisor: Site Manager

Pay: $21.00 per hour

Function:  To support the mission of Next Step to Success under the direction of the program’s Site Manager. The Van Driver-Assistant Success Coach is a professional role model who will provide transportation, mentorship, leadership, and guidance within a supportive and engaging environment to youth who are learning to cultivate healthy character traits.

 Education & Experience Minimum Qualifications:

• Associate degree or three years of experience working with Next Step to Success children or adolescents
• Must be 23 years of age to meet vehicle insurance requirements.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Must meet Company Approved Safe Drivers Criteria
• Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Using company vans transports youth participants to and from locations (including pick up and drop off) daily.

2. Provide a safe and secure environment for all youth.

3. Follow, plan, prepare for and deliver lesson plans and course activities.

4. Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth ages 13-16.

5. Ensure that youth are actively participating in a variety of program activities.

6. Build connections with youth and practice with them the usefulness of the content being taught.

7. Accurately collect and record program/attendance and other data as required.

8. Participate and act as chaperon in on-site and off-site extracurricular activities.

9. Ensures appropriate conduct, safety, and development of youth participants.

10. Maintain confidentiality of program participants.

11. Performs van safety inspections before and after each route

12. Participate in team meetings and trainings, including defensive driver trainings.

13. Evaluate program equipment and make recommendations for supplies, staff and youth needs.

14. Support with daily clean-ups, mealtimes, breaks, etc.

15. Engage parents and other adult family members, as well as other partners in the program.

16. Maintain knowledge and understanding of all NSTS policies and procedures.

17. Monitor and ensure the safety of youth to include abiding by program guidelines, policies, and procedures.

18. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills Requirements

1. Experience with and enjoys working with middle and high school-aged youth.

2. Experienced driver with a positive driving record and completion of required training.

3. Knowledgeable about adolescent development

4. Knowledgeable about The Success Sequence

5. Knowledgeable about the work of Angela Duckworth and Carol Dweck.

6. Knowledgeable about positive youth development framework.

7. Knowledgeable about the city of Norfolk’s issues with poverty.

8. Ability to communicate effectively in different forms; oral, written, and telephonic.

9. Ability to develop age-appropriate character education lesson plans and teach character education lessons to youth

10. Ability to work cooperatively on a team.

11. Ability and desire to lead and/or teach extra-curricular activities/workshops to varying ages.

12. Ability to seek guidance when needed.

13. Knowledge of racial disparities and impact on community youth.

14. Demonstrates knowledge of the success sequence.

15. Motivated, safety conscious and responsible.

Candidate must be capable of performing all the essential duties of the position.  Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time, sit, walk, write, climb stairs and bend. Must be able to comprehend written directions. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
