As the election season heats up, so do voter-registration controversies. Virginia Tech’s registrar of elections in Montgomery County, Va., issued two press releases that warned of dire consequences for students who sign up to vote using their college addresses. The releases warned that students could no longer be claimed as dependents on their parents’ tax returns, could lose scholarships, or could lose coverage under their parents’ car and health insurance. Members of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights said those incorrect statements discourage students from registering to vote. The Virginia State Board of Elections said it was “modifying and clarifying” the guidelines on which the releases were based. Sept. 8, http://www.nytimes.com.
