Comprehensive well-child health services, such as those covered by Medicaid, play a critical role in preparing children for school and helping to determine how well they will do in life, this study says.
The report comes at a time when many states are contemplating health insurance coverage expansions and other changes in publicly funded programs. The study calls on states considering modifications in their child health programs to preserve Medicaid’s Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment program, and to ensure that children have access to a full array of high-quality, preventive and developmental services.
