American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF)
Following up on AYPF’s June 2000 report, “Less Hype, More Help: Reducing Juvenile Crime, What Works – and What Doesn’t,” this report focuses on cross-cutting challenges in juvenile justice. For each challenge, the report describes a program that is successfully meeting it on the local level.
The eight spotlighted challenges are: reducing incarceration of non-dangerous youth offenders; developing a continuum of community-based sanctions and interventions for non-dangerous delinquents; employing research-driven program strategies for reducing delinquency; intervening intensively with youth at risk of chronic delinquency; providing comprehensive support to youth with behavioral disturbances; ensuring quality treatment and development services for incarcerated youth; providing quality education and career development services to help youth assume positive roles in society; and reducing inappropriate detention of youth awaiting trial or placement.
Model programs for meeting each challenge include: the State of Missouri’s Division of Youth Services (addresses over-reliance on incarceration), Gulf Coast Trades Center in Texas (provides quality education and career development for delinquent youth) and the Juvenile Justice Operational Master Plan in the state of Washington (juvenile detention reform). 66 pages. $5.
