Objective:
Denver Public Schools (DPS) seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Director for the Department of Extended Learning & Community Schools (DELCS). The Director of DELCS will provide district-wide leadership and support for quality afterschool programming and youth development. Responsible for multiple, district-wide program operations and strategic planning for Discovery Link and Neighborhood Centers. Represents DPS as the Denver Afterschool Alliance (DAA). Participates in district-level and city-district strategic functions and initiatives. Represents DPS in appropriate community forums and Board of Education meetings related to the Denver Plan 2020.
Essential Functions:
Leadership
– Establish a shared vision and culture for DELCS, as well as the school sites
– Identifies goals and strategies for DELCS and provides ongoing oversight of progress towards achievement of department goals
– Supervises and provides leadership support for approximately 300 district personnel
– Ensures afterschool programming and neighborhood centers deliver appropriate services for all students including students with disabilities, students with a Section 504 Plan and/or Gifted & Talented students
– Leads staff functions regarding professional learning and differentiated school supports
– Supports change management related to culture, systems, policies, and practices
– Serves as a member of one or more key city-wide afterschool systems and represents DELCS in city-wide afterschool efforts or convenings
– Collaborates with the Personalized Learning team, Whole Child / Healthy Child 2020 team, Whole Child Supports, school leaders, DPS Foundation, grantors, and key stakeholders to ensure quality afterschool programming for DPS schools
– Works actively to develop strong collaborative relationships and district partnerships through active participation on committees, task forces and in meetings involving community agencies associated with afterschool programming and youth development
Management
– Manages collection and analysis of data; and reports data to inform data-driven decision making for program quality and outcomes
– Directly supervises and evaluates, through appropriate review structures, Extended Learning & Community Schools exempt and non-exempt staff
– Actively seeks new funding sources (including grant funds), oversees compliance with all grant guidelines, and serves as a primary contact for funders
– Administers a budget for all DELCS staff members and supported programs and approves expenditures, as authorized
– Assumes responsibility for departmental data collection and reporting necessary to procure funds and account for expenditures within multiple (federal, state, local and grant-driven) budgets
Communication
– Communicates and consults with the Mayor’s Office, Denver Afterschool Alliance, DPS Foundation, Chief of Staff, and other external stakeholders
– Provide exceptional customer service to parents and other community members
– Proactively resolves problems for parents and community members
– Maintains confidential information
Performs other duties as assigned
Licensure & Certification:
– Valid Colorado Driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage, and an acceptable driving record for the past three years
Education & Experience:
– Bachelor’s degree required in education, non-profit management, or related field; advanced degree preferred
– Ten or more years of related experience in the field of education, youth development, or a closely related field with a minimum of three years of administrative experience
