New York State Afterschool Network
The New York State Afterschool Network (NYSAN) stresses the importance
of summer learning programs through this list of innovative programs and a set of recommendations for expanding youth summer learning opportunities.
In order to prevent the summer months from becoming a period of slowed development for at-risk youth, the NYSAN begins its report by citing research that blames the achievement gap between low- and middleincome
youths primarily on the lack of summer learning opportunities for low-income elementary school students. The report lists seven New York organizations involved in expanding such opportunities, including the city’s Department of Youth and Community Development, which requires out-of-school-time programs to operate year-round.
The report concludes with a set of policies and practices for summer learning programs. Free, four pages. (646) 943-8670, www.nysan.org/content/
